The person who got me this writing job told me to write something light and funny about a famous cosplay model. Well, thank God this is a blog post about my life as a D-List Cosplayer and not a magazine article.
Back in 2003, I wrote a essay about the Hollywood’s It Girl, ranging from 1920′s Clara Bow to early 2000′s Paris Hilton. Again, that was 2003. That essay got me an A in my upper-level English class and I was so proud that I thought this piece of text would get me a internship at a fashion, celebrity and rich lifestyle magazine, 944. I didn’t.
Back on topic, what is an It Girl? Well, a It Girl is a female celebrity who achieve fame with an engaging personality and beauty which includes sex appeal. Does that apply to cosplay and more specifically, cosplay models? Yes. But it’s more than that. If you must have the creativity and the chameleon ability to transform yourself from the hot girl in the Whole Foods supermarket to a near-exact double of a super-heroine from a Marvel Studios film. Does it have to be sexy? Probably, but it’s not a must. These cosplay models could be sexy or if it applies to their character they are suppose to cosplay as. But it’s not what makes a cosplay model famous. They will get attention, but that the power that is the It Factor.
Do I have the It Factor? Not really. I been in this cosplay game for five years and still haven’t achieve a fraction of the power of It. I have an asymmetrical face so beauty is out the window and my personality is creepy and awkward at best. My place is on the D-List.
