Matilda McDuck is blind, and due to Druid magic can see people’s auras.

As you can tell, this is most likely where Hortense’s photograph came from. In DR’s style she’s known for her curly, red hair. DT17 takes inspiration from numerous Duck artists/lore, not limited to Barks and Rosa.

Matilda’s swank glasses, if they were to appear, could be explained beyond fashion choice but that she was blinded from illness at a young age. 

When Scrooge bought those cheap Druid stones, she managed to soothe their frustrations, and they decided to bless her when they were ready to curse her brother.

An aura represents a person’s personality and values in a color scheme. These auras are usually invisible to the average human eye. Matilda can not only see these auras but accurately interpret them in regards to the person’s personality. 

But this is just a headcanon.
