Okay, but imagine if all the kids before Harry were sorted into Gryffindor and Slytherin until the dorm rooms and classes were maxed out?  And the Sorting Hat was like ‘well, shit’, and had to assign Harry to Hufflepuff?  (We know he wouldn’t be in Ravenclaw.  He doesn’t care enough about his classwork and he’d absolutely HATE to solve a riddle just to get into his common room, especially when his archnemesis has the surname Riddle.)
